NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) – If you’re rebuilding after a major storm, you might not know there’s a sales tax relief program available just for you.
The Tennessee Department of Revenue created the Natural Disaster Sales Tax Relief Program shortly after the 2010 floods.
“A sales tax refund may seem like a small thing in the grand scheme or things, but we’ve all seen our neighbors when they’ve been through some of these horrible, devastating things and every little bit helps,” Kathleen said. Jacob, a ministry information officer.
Individuals who receive financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the repair, replacement, or construction of their primary residence that was damaged or destroyed in a natural disaster may be eligible for reimbursement .
Residents affected by the March Flash Flood, Waverly Flood, or December Tornadoes are likely eligible.
According to the Department of Revenue, storm victims can get up to $2,500 back in sales tax for the purchase of major appliances, furniture and building materials. A claim can be filed up to one year from the date of FEMA’s decision letter. Therefore, applicants should wait to submit their case until all purchases have been made.
Here are the items eligible for a sales tax refund:
With a purchase price of $3,200 or less per item:
• Clothes dryer
• Washing machine
• Water heater
• Book shelves
• Entertainment cabinet
• Dining room set
• The tables
With a purchase price of $500 or less per item:
• Garbage bag
• Roof shingles
• Rain gutter downspouts
• The Windows
• To paint
• Roofing paper
• Building tools
• Floor covering (a limit of $500 applies to the unit price of the product)
• Painting materials
• Other building materials
• Cleaning and disinfection supplies
Since 2010, the state has refunded $2,846,375.74 in sales tax to residents affected by natural disasters.
