Veteran Gamaka Vocalist HR Keshavamurthy Honored With Padma Shri

Shivamogga (Karnataka): HR Keshavamurthy, a renowned singer from Gamaka, was awarded the Padma Shri award.

This art must be promoted by the government. I have been playing Gamaka for six decades. To pass this on to the next generation, we need funds, he said.

Even now, he gives up to teach and perform live on stage. Gamaka is a way of telling stories through song. Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Olympic Gold Medalist Neeraj Chopra, Late Punjabi Folk Singer Gurmeet Bawa, Chairman of Bharat Biotech Krishna Ella and Co-Founder Suchitra Ella, the former Secretary at the Inside Union Rajiv Mehrishi, Microsoft Corporation President and CEO Satya Nadella, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai are among the 128 Padma winners.

Keshavamurthy has taught over 1000 seekers without charging them a penny. Even today, it is curious to educate and perform in front of an audience.

Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri are the three types of Padma awards.

Art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, commerce and industry, medicine, literature and education, sport and public service are some of the disciplines and fields of activity for which prizes are awarded.
