All proceeds from the sale of used books will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross in support of the humanitarian crisis appeal in Ukraine.

Russian forces began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Since then, more than 3.6 million refugees are estimated to have left Ukraine as Russian missile and artillery attacks destroy towns and homes.

The Meaford Public Library used a book sale fundraiser that raised more than $200 on its first day of operation on Monday. The sale runs until April 3.

The books were provided by the Meaford Net Shed and Friends of Meaford Public Library. Public book donations are not currently being accepted by the library.

Meaford Public Library Director of Library Services Lynne Fascinato said more than 1,000 lightly used fiction and non-fiction books in hardcover and softcover are available for sale. A collection of audiobooks, CDs and DVD movies is also offered.

The books are categorized into adult, young adult and children “so there’s something for everyone,” Fascinato said.

The Ukrainian flag is displayed in the library’s main window facing Sykes Street – Meaford’s main thoroughfare. As part of the fundraiser, a space has been set up in the library where people can color a sunflower – the national flower of Ukraine – and place it in the library display case to show their support.

A poster is displayed with a list of other humanitarian groups customers may wish to contribute to, including the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, Save the Children, UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders.
