Did you have your gift wrapping done at the Ramona Library or did you do a sugar scrub in one of our Christmas workshops? The Ramona Library, which opened about 10 years ago, has become a community treasure.
The generosity of the donors of the Friends of the Ramona Library allows the library to offer many programs, all free to participants. Not all libraries can do this. This year, the Friends allocated $ 16,710 to support library initiatives, likely about half of what the group contributes in a normal year (due to the COVID-19 shutdown).
The Friends group supports the branch by booking and paying for the programs, artists, musicians and some of the special speakers that are brought into the community and target different age groups or are suitable for families. These special programs demonstrate the many ways the library can educate and entertain our community and also allow people to enjoy the free opportunities that are made available by libraries.
The Friends of the Ramona Library recently contributed matching funds to purchase 350 additional titles of Hot Right Now DVDs and books as well as popular non-fiction topics (cookbooks, travel, gardening, etc.), books. children’s pictures, chapter books, graphic novels and new titles for teens. Over the years, the Friends of the Ramona Library have increased what the county library system buys by adding books, magazines, and newspaper subscriptions for public use.
With limited programming currently permitted, the Friends have funded most of the craft supplies for the popular Take and Make craft for all ages which can be picked up at the Ramona branch service desk. Each month, the branch staff collect around 300 craft kits for different age groups as we continue to encourage use of the library and its related activities.
The Friends are funded primarily through the sale of used books in the Open Book Store and online sales through Amazon. Smile Amazon is another fundraiser as well as membership dues, donations, and the sale of donor wall tiles.
The bookstore is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, hoping to extend hours with the library. Due to health service rules, wearing a mask is compulsory in the library.
