Chicken Soup for Soul Entertainment Screen Media

COS COB, Connecticut, June 7, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment Inc. (Nasdaq: CSSE), one of the largest ad-supported video-on-demand network (AVOD) operators in continuous, today announced that Screen Media has acquired full North American rights to writer and director Anthony Hayes’ upcoming thriller GOLD, in which he shares the limelight with Zac Efron (The greatest showman, Extremely mean, incredibly evil and vile), and Susie porter (The monkey mask, Cargo). Hayes is known for his memorable roles in Animal Kingdom, The square and Slap her. Following a bidding war between numerous AFM contenders last year, Screen Media came out on top by purchasing the film, which was filmed in South Australia late last year and is currently in post-production.

GOLD is all about greed and whatever people are going to do to make a fortune. When two men traveling through the remote desert stumble upon the biggest gold nugget ever found, they must come up with a plan to protect and mine the gold. One leaves to secure the equipment while the other remains in place to protect the discovery … at all costs. GOLD is written by Anthony Hayes and Polly Smyth, and produced by John Schwarz, Michael Schwarz (Danger Close, Killer) and Hayes. Executive producers are Andrew Mann, Peter Touche, Simon Williams, Paul Wiegard, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, Nick Forward and Mike Runagall. Altitude Film Sales manages the overseas sales of the project. GOLD will screen in Australia on the Stan streaming service as the “Stan Original Film” after a theatrical release via Madman Entertainment.

“It’s always every filmmaker’s dream to make a movie and get a big North American release for their movie and a bidding war is even rarer,” said Hayes. “It’s a testament to our film GOLD and to everyone who worked so hard to bring it to life that Screen Media will bring this film to theaters and beyond across North America. This proves that the independent film landscape is alive and well and that distributors and audiences alike have a voracious appetite for films made outside of the studio system.

“We can’t wait for the public to discover GOLD when it hits the big screen next year, ”Screen Media said in a statement. “Anthony and Polly have crafted a gritty and unforgettable parable of the pitfalls of the modern world and Zac is the perfect choice to bring this thrilling and relentless story to life.”

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Screen Media by Seth Needle, senior vice president of global acquisitions and co-productions, Screen Media, with Mike Runagall, managing partner at Altitude Film Sales, on behalf of the filmmakers.

Recent Screen Media Acquisitions Include Megan Fox Thriller Until death, and mafia thriller Birthday cake with Shiloh Fernandez, Ewan McGregor and Val Kilmer. Recent releases include the critically acclaimed documentary Street gang: how we got to Sesame Street, Senior Moment with William Shatner, Jean Smart and Christopher Lloyd, Bella Thorne’s thriller Girl, Simon West’s disaster action film Sky fire, and the hit Nicolas Cage Willy’s Wonderland.
