Chapel Hill is accepting nominations for the next Poet Laureate

The Town of Chapel Hill is seeking candidates for its next Poet Laureate and encourages all local poets to apply. Local artist, educator and activist CJ Suitt has held the position since its inception in 2019. According to a city release, Suitt is participating in the selection process for future Poet Laureates.

Chapel Hill describes his position as Poet Laureate as “an ambassador for poetry” who “connects with the poetic community and engages in activities that enhance the literary arts in Chapel Hill”.

“CJ was a perfect fit for the inaugural title of Poet Laureate of Chapel Hill,” Mayor Pam Hemminger said of the city’s outgoing Poet Laureate. “We are deeply grateful to him for sharing his passion and talent in this role. Through his participation, he has helped lay the foundation for a successful program and we look forward to continuing to elevate the voices of talented poets.” in our community.

The City Poet Laureate’s various responsibilities include writing and performing original works, attending workshops, and working with future laureates. The new poet laureate will receive $3,000 for the two-year role, which begins next January and ends in December 2024.

Eligible poets must have active projects within the past five years, as well as a personal or professional connection to the city. Applications are open until Thursday, September 8. Interested individuals may submit a resume and portfolio and must answer additional questions regarding their interest.
