2022 US National Book Awards Long List: Children’s Literature

The books on the long list of content for young people are the first cohort of five categories named this week by the US National Book Awards.

Long lists of the first of the five categories

Jhe National Book Foundation of the United States – with an awards ceremony scheduled for November 16 – began today (September 14) to announce its long lists for the 2021 National Book Awards. As this program likes to do , it analyzes ads in five categories over three days.

The finalists – the shortlisted entries – are due to be named on October 4.

The extensive list provided to members of the news media today is for National Children’s Literature Book Award.

This is the first of five categories. Coming :

  • The National Book Award Long List in Translated Literature
  • The National Book Award Long List in Poetry
  • The National Book Award long list in non-fiction
  • The National Book Award Long List in Fiction

This long list of content aimed at young readers

Two previously honored National Book Awards authors on this list are Traci Chee, who was a finalist in this category in 2020, and Anna-Marie McLemore, lnated for this category twice, in 2016 and 2021.

Collectively, the authors and illustrators on this list have been honored with the Newbery Honor and Medal; the honor Walter; the honor of Printz; the Coretta Scott King Book Prize; the Ezra Jack Keats Award; the Kirkus Prize for Literature for Young Readers; the Glyph Comics Awards; the Stonewall Book Award; and the Emmys.

Publishers submitted a total of 296 books for the 2022 children’s literature category.

The judges of this one are Becky Albertalli, Joseph Bruchac, Meghan Dietsche Goel, Jewell Parker Rhodes (Chair) and Lilliam Rivera.

As always, jury decisions are made independently of National Book Foundation staff and board, and deliberations are strictly confidential.
