2022 Lexus LX600 debuts as premium Land Cruiser

Lexus may have a reputation built on luxurious, quiet executive sedans, but as the market shifted to SUVs, its flagship model concept evolved as well. Toyota’s luxury branch is releasing a brand new one for 2022, the Lexus LX600. This top of the line has all the supple leather and cutting edge technology you would expect from a new Lexus, along with some serious off-road skills.

Lexus hasn’t revealed a price, but we expect the 2022 LX600 to start above the base decal of the 2021 Lexus LX570 it replaces at $ 86,960. It will hit sales lots in the first quarter of next year.

Land Cruiser America missed

The Toyota Land Cruiser has long been one of the most accomplished all-terrain vehicles in the world. Americans tasted it for the first time in 1958. And the last, this year. Toyota has redesigned the Land Cruiser globally, but announced that the United States will not be getting a 2022 model.

We will have this one though. The LX600 is, functionally, a luxurious version of the all-new Land Cruiser that Toyota has decided not to ship to the United States.

All grids

There’s no way around this – the all-new LX600 is fully calendered. If you like the aggressive and avant-garde look of recent models of big trucks and SUVs, you’ll love this one. If you’re not a fan of the big grille trend, you’re not going to like this look.

Once you can look away from the big nose, you’ll find plenty of character lines preventing the LX600 from looking like a block. A deep trench runs down the center of the hood. The C-pillar is thick with a steep angle. It’s a uniquely designed choice, with other large SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade opting for larger windows and less metal in the back. We hope this will not create a blind spot.

Like almost every other SUV on the market, Lexus is switching from a badge on the reader door to the brand name in large type, a look first seen on the new Lexus NX 2022.

Quilted leather and more screens than passengers

Inside, the top of the line Lexus is the luxurious getaway you’ve come to expect. Buyers can select two or three rows of seats. The basic model can accommodate five people in two rows. The Premium, Luxury and F Sport models can accommodate seven people in three rows. And a new Ultra Luxury trim gives all that space to just four, with second-row captains’ seats that recline 48 degrees and include a footrest.

Instead of the large central touchscreen, Lexus used two screens. The upper part, at 12.3 inches, manages navigation, entertainment and the rear view camera. The lower part, at 7 inches, manages the air conditioning and driving parameters. The driver’s instruments are a digital display. Rear passengers receive screens in the backs of the seats in front of them, as well as a center-mounted touchscreen that manages the seat position and rear air conditioning. Ultra Luxury models therefore have six screens for four passengers. Amusingly, press photos sent by Lexus show a passenger ignoring them all in favor of his iPad.

The new Lexus interface system incorporates a voice assistant “intended to be the primary means by which guests interact with the new multimedia system,” explains Lexus. So you don’t need to touch the screens.

A 25-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system is optional.

Fewer cylinders, more power

The only engine offered is a 409 horsepower, 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6. This surpasses the 383-horsepower V8 from last year’s LX. Lexus has yet to release fuel efficiency figures. But with that smaller engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission, they’re likely to get better.

The bones of the Land Cruiser should make the LX exceptional off cobblestone surfaces.

The body-on-chassis construction (borrowed from the Toyota Tundra) is key to the LX600’s off-road capability. Active Height Control lets you set a preferred ride height, then continuously adjusts the suspension to keep it going over rough terrain. In the parking lot, it lowers to facilitate entry and exit. Multi-Terrain Select allows the driver to select different surfaces and multiple off-road camera views are available.

Security technology

Lexus Safety Sense 2.5 means pre-collision assistance, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and automatic high beams are all standard. It’s a comfort in a vehicle of this size. Lexus says the system can detect bikes and pedestrians even in low light.

Model F Sport

For the first time, Lexus will offer an F Sport version of its larger vehicle. The sportier model rolls on 22-inch wheels. It incorporates a limited slip differential to improve handling on the road and re-tuned suspension shocks to improve cornering. The F Sport is easy to spot – the large chrome grille is replaced with a black mesh version.
